Wolfson Children’s Hospital opens Walmart/Sam’s Club Media Center thanks to $750,000 gift

Walmart Market Manager Michael Brown; Wolfson Children’s Hospital President Michael D. Aubin; and Kerri Clark, director of Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Hospitals in Jacksonville, dedicated the new Walmart/Sam’s Club Media Center today, along with Walmart and Sam’s Club associates.

The Media Center will be a haven for those who love Wolfson Children’s Hospital patients. Having a sick child in the hospital is stressful for any parent, grandparent or caregiver. Whether a child is having a routine X-ray or lab test, or is facing complex brain, heart or other surgery or imaging tests, there is anxiety about the results.

The management, associates and customers of Walmart and Sam’s Club in Northeast Florida care about local families. This past summer, they completed the final gift in a three-year pledge to raise $750,000 toward this new Walmart/Sam’s Club Media Center in the renovated lobby of Wolfson Children’s Hospital. It was all part of the company’s Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals fundraising campaign. The new Walmart/Sam’s Club Media Center will be a haven and a resource for parents, grandparents and other caregivers.

Entertainment, communication and educational features of the Media Center include:
• 4 PCs loaded with icons for:
• Pandora music channel
• DVD player and movies at no cost to our families while they’re at the hospital
• The KidsHealth.org children’s health library for parents and caregivers
• iBooks for children and adult

The PCs can also be used by parents and siblings to check their e-mail, Facebook or Twitter accounts, etc. The Walmart/Sam’s Club Media Center will feature KUBI, a remote-controlled desktop stand for iPads that add hands-free convenience and a dynamic social element to video calls. Friends and siblings can use KUBI in the Media Center to connect to a patient in isolation (an average of 20% of our patients are in isolation every day). The patient will have a portable KUBI-enabled iPad and cart to connect with their family and friends in the Media Center. Future plans include a device charging station.

Wolfson Children’s Hospital President Michael D. Aubin said, “The Walmart/Sam’s Club Media Center is a wonderful enhancement to our hospital that will offer a welcome distraction to parents and other caregivers, to our patients, and to their siblings and other loved ones who want to spend time with them. We are so grateful to Walmart and Sam’s Club stores who have supported Wolfson Children’s Hospital for so many years because they care about our community and its families.”
