Wolfson Children’s Hospital patient Jacob Lopez to hit ceremonial opening tee shot at Web.com Tour Championship

Web.com Tour officials and Wolfson Children’s Hospital announced today the creation of the First Shot Fore Healthy Kids, a ceremonial opening tee shot on Thursday morning at Atlantic Beach Country Club to kick off the Web.com Tour Championship. Wolfson Children’s Hospital is the event’s main charitable beneficiary.

The First Shot Fore Healthy Kids ceremony will begin at 7:10 a.m. on Thursday, October 6 prior to the start of the first round. Professional tee times for Thursday and Friday will start at 7:35 a.m. on Nos. 1 and 10 tees.

Hitting the First Shot Fore Healthy Kids will be 9-year-old Jacob Lopez from Jacksonville, Fla. In 2015, Jacob and his mother were involved in a car accident while going out for ice cream during his spring break. The pair were severely injured, with Jacob suffering a brain injury and multiple internal issues from the accident, which left him paralyzed as a result.

The challenges Jacob faced after the accident could have seemed insurmountable, but Jacob, his family, and his team of doctors and nurses at Wolfson Children's Hospital were filled with hope from the start. He spent 124 days at Wolfson and has been in the care of 17 pediatric medical and surgical specialists. To date, he has endured eight surgeries, with more to come.

Jacob has visited Washington D.C. on behalf of Wolfson Children’s Hospital to lobby lawmakers as a part of a Children’s Hospital Association delegation promoting passage of the Advancing Care for Exceptional Kids Act of 2015, which would improve how care is delivered to the 2 million U.S. children who have complex medical conditions.

Jacob sees his wheelchair as a platform and visits local schools educating other kids on the importance of being properly buckled while in the car. For Jacob, living life to the fullest is the only option as he still plays golf and soccer, as well as several doctor visits and therapy sessions each week.
