Pediatric Heart Surgery

Board-certified pediatric cardiothoracic surgeons with the C. Herman and Mary Virginia Terry Heart Center at Wolfson Children’s Hospital perform a full range of cardiovascular surgeries for infants, children and adults, from simple to highly complex, using open-heart, minimally invasive and video-assisted approaches.

Our pediatric cardiovascular surgeons have performed nearly 800 heart surgeries over the last four years, serving children and their families in Northeast Florida, Southern Georgia and beyond.

Using advanced intraoperative and life-saving techniques, our team of pediatric cardiothoracic surgeons, anesthesiologists, perfusionists, physician extenders and nurses work with pediatric cardiologists and pediatric cardiovascular intensive care physicians to deliver excellent care for all patients in a dedicated 12-bed Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) at Wolfson Children’s Hospital.

The Terry Heart Center overall survival rates for pediatric heart surgery for 2011-2015 are 97.20% compared to the Society of Thoracic Surgeons average survival rate of 96.7%

Our heart program shares patient outcomes and other information with the Society for Thoracic Surgeons (STS) for their national database, which compares the results of more than 100 children’s heart surgery programs. Outcomes for our pediatric heart surgery program were submitted for the June 2015 report from the STS Congenital Heart Surgery Database, covering procedural data from January 1, 2011 through January 1, 2015. STS data are arranged by STAT Categories, a ranking of the complexity of pediatric and congenital heart surgery used by the STS (STAT 5 being the most complex heart procedures).
