Heart Surgery

Board-certified cardiovascular surgeons with the Children's Heart Center perform a full range of surgeries for infants, children and adults, from simple to highly complex. We provide a full range of open-heart, minimally invasive and video-assisted surgeries.

Each year, our surgeons perform nearly 200 heart surgeries, which is on the increase due to the number of patients coming from outside of Northeast Florida. Our program is also one of the safest, with a heart surgical mortality rate that has averaged approximately two percent in recent years, which is about half of what it is at many major programs in the country.

We have clinical experience with a variety of heart defects, including:

  • Atrial septal defects
  • Ventricular septal defects
  • Hypoplastic left heart syndrome
  • Transposition of the great arteries
  • Aortic and mitral valve disease, including the Ross operation
  • Total anomalous pulmonary venous return
  • Tetralogy of Fallot
  • Atrioventricular canal defects
  • Double-outlet RV
  • Coarctation of the aorta
  • Truncus arteriosus
  • Single ventricle palliation, including Glenn shunts and the Fontan operation
  • Ebstein's anomaly
  • Vascular rings
  • Pediatric non-cardiac thoracic operations, including pectus deformities

Using advanced and innovative techniques such as extracorpeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), a team of pediatric anesthesiologists, pediatric perfusionists, pediatric surgical nurses, nurse practitioners and physician assistants work with the cardiac surgery team and pediatric intensive care physicians and nurses.
