Evaluation

The Epilepsy Foundation of America estimates that approximately 326,000 American children under the age of 15 have epilepsy. It affects children at different ages, and in different ways. For some, it will be a temporary problem, easily controlled with medication, outgrown after a few years. For others, it may be a lifelong challenge affecting many areas of life.

To properly evaluate a child who is exhibiting epilepsy symptoms, the Pediatric Epilepsy Center's neuroscience team will review the patient's medical, psychological, social and educational issues. A diagnosis will be made and a subsequent plan of treatment will be established.

The diagnostic services available to our patients in the Center, and in collaboration with Wolfson Children’s Hospital's various departments and partners, include:

  • Complete seizure history
  • Comprehensive neurological examination
  • Neurophysiological tests: routine electroencephalogram (EEG), outpatient video-EEG, and Wada language and memory testing
  • Long-term video-EEG monitoring (scalp and intracranial)
  • Neuroimaging tests: magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), positron emission tomography (PET), and functional MRI (fMRI)
  • Neuropsychology
  • Speech and auditory processing evaluations
