The Pharmacy Department services both Wolfson Children’s Hospital and Baptist Medical Center. The Pharmacy provides 24-hour inpatient support for both facilities. The department is staffed with approximately 99 employees including technicians, centralized and decentralized pharmacists, pharmacy residents and interns, administrative personnel, and clerical support.

The department utilizes automated drug delivery units and profile dispense throughout the hospital. A large percentage of our unit dose medications are packaged onsite.

Pediatric and Adult decentralized clinical pharmacists provide clinical pharmacy services to their respective area of practice. Clinical services provided by the department include:

  • Chemotherapy order management, assisting with prescribing and regimen management
  • Medication History verification and clarification by consult
  • Patient education for complex medication regimens
  • Pain management and palliative care
  • Toxicology consults
  • IV to PO dose conversion
  • Renal dose adjustment
  • SCIP dosing management
  • Discharge counseling for complex medication regimens and warfarin
  • Pharmacokinetic dosing
  • TPN management
  • Antibiotic stewardship
  • Core measure assessment for VTE prophylaxis, MI and CHF medication goals
  • Anticoagulant monitoring
  • Duplicate therapy review and maintenance
  • Management of therapy related to drug shortages
  • Alaris guardrail compliance monitoring
  • Cardiac Rehab education programs
  • Formulary adherence
  • Working with colleagues to improve HCAPS scores
  • Work closely with physicians to guide them to affordable medication choices for patients
  • Participate in Code Blue and Code Stroke
  • Nursing education
  • Family education
  • Pediatric asthma education
  • Therapeutic management of medications on national backorder
