The Jacksonville Cleft Lip/Palate Clinic is comprised of an interdisciplinary team of physicians, dentists and other child health specialists to assess and care for each child. Some of the cleft team members have been with the program for more than 20 years.
A comprehensive care plan that addresses each child's unique condition is developed after the initial assessment and updated after each follow-up visit. The entire team meets to discuss each child after their clinic visits to ensure treatment plans are comprehensive and coordinated. The team's recommendations are then forwarded to the patient's pediatrician. The nurse coordinator works closely with every family as an important part of our care team, offering emotional support, information and education. One of the advantages of the team approach is the ability to plan and coordinate multiple surgeries when necessary, thus reducing the number of hospital admissions.
Our Team is comprised of pediatric subspecialists and other caregivers who, as a team, evaluate and treat each child. They include:
- CMS Family Resources
- CMS Social Services
- Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
- Otolaryngology (ENT)
- Pediatric Dentistry
- Plastic Surgery
- Speech Pathology
The diagnosis of a cleft lip or palate can be confirmed prenatally so parents can be provided with cleft information, family support prior to the child's birth and arrangements for enrollment into the program.
While the baby is still in the hospital after birth, the nurse coordinator will visit parents to discuss the diagnosis, instruct the family on how to best feed the child and provide family support.
New Patient Assessment
The nurse coordinator will obtain a history, assess feeding progress and/or problems and address care issues.
We provide material from the Florida Cleft Palate/Craniofacial Association and the American Cleft Palate Association, and we plan four annual family activities, including a year-end holiday party. Individualized support is provided to each family as required.
In-Home Feeding Visits
Upon recommendation of the Jacksonville Cleft Lip/Palate Clinic Team, our nurse coordinator can visit patients and their families in their home or at their primary care physician's office for feeding and instruction in other therapeutic interventions.
Cleft lip and palate surgical repair is done in stages. Some of the surgeries will be performed when your child is very young and some when your child is older and more developed. Some surgeries may not be done until s/he is a teenager. Surgeries are planned to coincide with your child's facial growth. The Jacksonville Cleft Lip/Palate Clinic has plastic, oral maxillofacial and dental surgeons who will consult with you on what type of surgery your child may need and when it is recommended.
