"Healing children's bodies and spirits through art."
Illness does not just inflict a person’s body. Left alone, it can affect their mind, will and emotions or in other words, their heart. Medicine can heal the body, but medicine alone cannot make a person whole. That is where Art with a Heart in Healthcare makes a difference. We are an organization focused on enhancing the lives of patients and their families through a fine art experience.
Art with a Heart in Healthcare is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated exclusively to arts and healing. Since our founding in 2001, we have served more than 70,000 children and their families in Jacksonville, Florida at Wolfson Children's Hospital, Nemours Children's Specialty Clinic and Brooks Rehabilitation Hospital.
Our emphasis on patient-centered creative expression helps humanize the high-tech atmosphere of clinical environments. Patients, families and clinicians we work with report that our services help diminish fear and relieve pain while empowering patients who can sometimes find themselves in a powerless situation.
Seven days a week, our talented team of artists-in-residence, community volunteers and interns from the University of North Florida develop art sessions to meet the unique needs of each patient. Together, artists and patients create art that reclaims the person’s sense of self, making a powerful contribution to the healing process. A majority of the people we serve have their first art experience with us. We use a variety of mediums, including painting, drawing, music, storytelling and photography, allowing participants the opportunity to discover their own artistic talents and learn about the arts.
