Common Reactions to Losing a Child 

There are many reactions to losing a child. Among them:

  • Emotional: Shock, anger, sadness, fear, hopelessness, guilt, confusion and possibly relief following the child's suffering.
  • Physical: Shortness of breath, rapid heart beat, exhaustion, sleeplessness, disorientation and sensitivity to noise.
  • Spiritual: Anger with God, feelings of abandonment and/or doubt and confusion, and perhaps a sense of punishment.
